Van Gough Cat
With Bandaged Ear

Cat With Fish Gift

Page 1

Inspired by Van Gogh's painting " Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe" painted in 1889. Vincent Van Gogh was why I became an artist. I was so taken with his life and struggles, the misunderstanding of his genius, when I was only 8. He was only 37 when he died and not by suicide but by an accident!

Though they were first domesticated nearly 10,000 years ago , cats retain the keen hunting instincts of their wild ancestors, as well as the simple gut that allows them to digest raw meat. I am struck by the Gifts that my brings to me and just wanted to create a painting of what it might appear to look like!

Outside my studio window is the Stratosphere. Sometimes cats come to visit and sit on the sill. I decided to make them as a part of the story of my art studio and the wonderful things that happen in real.

Lucy is the cat who
 posed for me at an
Air B&B while I was on summer vacation. She
was a gift of that time remaining still so I could capture her color and
pose. She liked to rub her face against the Buddha sculpture in the
back yard.

To me consciousness is the existence of what creates a past, present and future. I incorporate pieces of consciousness as shapes of color in this painting. The color of what we are, what we feel and our determination of existing because of being conscious is what I am after. Here the shapes of color (as consciousness) surround the cat, mouse and duck creating
a whimsy with meaning lightheartedly.

Alter Ego Cat

Majestic and worldly:
a part of the universe of miracles. With a cat's articular consciousness, this cat became my alter ego through the study of Freud and Jung, egos and the Id were the main subject matter to take on the day and the colors of the psychology of ego.

It Must be Love

Inspired by two cats who seem to be together forever. They stay together, play together, eat together and sleep together. One follows the other and it is amazing. They are called Shadow and Lisa.

16x20

Inspired by Pablo Picasso's painting, "Women with a Hat on Blue". Picasso painted many women wearing abstracted hats. He changed the world several times during his life of majestic and imposing artistic styles.

Marc Chagall painted
" I & My Village "
in 1911. Chagall's
painting is deep
and serious using surrealist type style. Using cats in this village as the residents this is a whimsy, yet serious matter  in honor of Marc Chagall 1887 - 1985.
